7m Arivu - too good in Papers!!!

The lookout for an entirely new plot in story making forum of tamizh cinema takes a new turn with 7m arivu’s arrival!!! Seems more stress and care was taken in script as they stepped back in film making. Story about the not so known glory of Bodhi dharman and mix up of sci-fi stuff makes it an interesting plot. Deserving a bouquet, the director shines for such a script.

Narrations initially make it more of documentary kind and the flashback scenes were kindling interest. But, as the real part of story in present starts, the director takes some leniency on logic. Especially the casting of the main villain was too confusing as he is given all mighty super powers. One controlling someone’s mind is agreeable, but then making a layman a martial arts expert in a moment is something not practical.

Surya, as far his part is concerned, has done his part explicitly well. And more of that youthful energetic Surya( ayan, aadhavan kind) is seen here too, which actually is boring especially in his intro song. His ground work for the character and acting has been classy.

Shruthi hasan, a fresh arrival to kollywood has been impressive. More of Tamil nativity speaking could be brought in, especially the slang. Johnny tri nguyen, another imported villain has delivered good with his looks and body language. But, then some more work could have been made in his casting. 

Harris Jeyaraj could have worked more on background as the feeling of freshness in the script was not amicably complemented by the music. Rather, songs and BGM lower the tempo of the story at places. Ravi.K.Chandran shines with his lens at picturing some song sequences. Anthony has done a decent job in editing for a movie demanding more from him.

It makes us feel that the Director has involved himself much in expressing the urge to kindle one’s forgotten glory that he actually has overseen few logical errors in the script. The message is delivered. But the typical Murugadoss style and realism is missing here (We still remember the romance part in tamil Ghajni flashback!!).

At last, an impact which was supposed to be made on seeing such a film after this sort of hype created was not that deep enough. Anyways, worth a watch one in theaters for something NEW from the director’s story board!!!

A long gap after working with legends like Mani rathnam and Shankar and after inspiring performances in RDB and some telugu hits(KIKK, Nu osthaanantae…etc..), Siddarth attempts to make a comeback to Tamizh film industry.  But ultimately he tests our patience.

Well to start with, director gets a pat with the superb picturization of title and initial shots. The Fresh looking press photographer role suits one of the heroines well and a typical Chennai is captured. The back ground score and novel cinematography for the first song captures our attention. But then, I guess the director has taken a break in adding tempo to the story. Siddarth makes some philanthropic acts and mystery around his origin is maintained. But some unrealistic and unjustifiable turns take place in the story.

The opera type song by the US heroine really makes one feel the speed breaker in the story. The mix up of present and flashback fails to make an impact. Maybe a continuous thingy for flash back in the second half could have been tried. Later the usual cliché like the mom’s depart, Cancer patient   etc... , dampens the expectations created by initial shots. The main heroine tried to replicate Indian origin American and she puts up a decent show. Quite hard to imagine a doctor being arrogant at places in the second half. Few places here and there, we couldn’t avoid developing a stage drama feel.   

Novelty in Music especially BG scores, slow motion camera (Over dosage at places) tries to take the movie to greater heights. Script gets applause with the character of Siddarth, kaleidoscope view of initial phases of the movie etc. Some questions rise about Mouli family’s adapting nature, Hero’s never ending voyage etc… Maybe director should have worked more in scripting. But, always a red carpet welcome to novel attempts and work by cinematographer needs a special mention. 180 days of siddarth’s life and the twists and turns. 180 + minutes of fun, charm, love and we feel the final moments of the movie miss an accelerator. A bouquet to the director and well it’s worth a watch once in theatres mainly for the eye catching shots!!!

                 ஒரு திரைப்படமாய் ஏனோ மனதைச் சென்றடையவில்லை.அருமை என்றும் கூற இயலாது,மாறாய் ஒரு புதுமுயற்சி,மேனனிடமிருந்து,வரவேற்கலாம்.படம் படுமோசம் காட்சிகள் எல்லைமீறியதாய் இருப்பதாய் கூறுபவர்களுக்கு,அவ்வாறெனில் முதலில் நீங்கள் பெரும்பாலான ஹாலிவுட் படங்களைப் பார்த்து அருமை என்று சொல்வதை தவிர்க்க வேண்டும்.இரண்டாவது,செல்வராகவன் போன்றவர்களின் படங்களில் உணர்ச்சிகள் மிக்கது என்ற போர்வையில் காண்பிக்கப்படும் காட்சிகளைப் பார்த்து ஆஹா ஒஹோ என்றும் என்னை பாதித்தது என்றும் கூறி சோகம் கொண்டு கனத்த மனதுடன் செல்பவர்கள் அதையே சமூகம் என்ற பார்வையில் கூறியதும் ஏன் ஏற்க மறுக்கின்றனர்,புரியவில்லை(அதற்காக செல்வராகவன் படங்களை குறை கூறவில்லை).மூன்றாவது,எண்ணம் எப்படியோ?! உலகும் அப்படியே,இதை நான் கூறவில்லை,ஒவ்வொரு மனிதனுள்ளும் ஒரு மிருகம் உண்டு என்பது யாரும் மறுக்க இயலாத உண்மை.ஆனால்,கெளதம் மேனனும்,சமூகத்திடையே ஆழமாகப் பதிக்கப்படவேண்டிய கருத்தை அழுத்தமாகச் சொல்லியிருக்கலாம்.அதை அவர் ஒழுங்காய் சொல்லத் தவறியதாய் தோன்றுகிறது.த்ரில்லர் என்று பெயரிட்டுவிட்டதாலும் பார்ப்பவர்களுக்கு அதில் வரும் துப்பாக்கியும் பைத்தியத்தனமும்,ரத்தமும் சதையும்தான் பிரதானமாகத் தெரியுமே தவிர(இதுவும் ஒரு மனித இயல்பே),அவர்களைப் போய் சேரவேண்டிய செய்தி அதிலே மறைக்கப்பட்டுவிடுகிறது.ஆனால்,சைக்கோ த்ரில்லர் படமாய் துவக்கி நேஷனல் ஜியாக்ரபிக் டாகுமெண்டரி போல் முடித்துவிட்டார் (அந்த டாக்டரைப் பார்த்தால் கூட டிஸ்கவரியில் வரும் அறிவியல் வல்லுநர் போல்தான் இருக்கிறார்).ஹீரோ சப்ஜக்ட் என்று தொடங்கி போலீசை இறுதியில் வரவழைத்து முடிக்கும் படங்களைப் போல.கௌதம் இது சமுகத்திற்கு செய்தி சொல்வதற்காய் எடுத்தபடமா? அவ்வாறெனில் திரையை பார்க்க இயலாது அக்கம் பக்கம் திரும்பி நெளியவைக்கும் காட்சிகள் சிலதை தவிர்த்திருக்கலாம்.த்ரில்லர் என்பதாயின் கடைசியில் அந்த நீண்ட விளக்கம் தேவையில்லை என்பது போல் தோன்றுகிறது.அதனால் இறுதியில் இது எந்த வகை சார்ந்த படம் என்று சிறிது நேரம் குழப்பம் நிலவுகிறது.படத்தில் இசையற்று இருப்பது போன்ற உணர்வு ஏனோ தோன்றவில்லை,இரவு நேரங்களில் இயற்கையாய் தோன்றும் சத்தங்களை உபயோகப்படுத்தி இருப்பது காரணமாக இருக்கலாம்.சிறிது நேரமே வந்தாலும் தன் பார்வையிலும் தன் ஒரு சிரிப்பிலேயுமே தன்னைப் பற்றி கூறிவிடும் நோயாளியாக சமந்தா,பாராட்டுக்கள்.வீரா,இனிமேல் த்ரில்லர் படங்களுக்கு தமிழ் திரையுலகம் இவரை நிரந்தரமாக நியமித்துவிடாதிருந்தால் சரி.முதல் படமாயினும் சைக்கோவாக நன்றாகவே தன்னை காண்பித்திருக்கிறார்,சமீராவிடம் புல்வெளியில் அமர்ந்து பேசுகையில் வீராவாக அந்த முகத்தில் நிலவும் அமைதியும் சட்டென்று சமராக மாறுகையில் அதே முகத்தில் தானாகத் தோன்றும் ஆத்திரமும் கோபமும் என இவர் நடிப்பு நன்று.உடல் எரிந்த நிலையில்,அதாவது சமரின் கற்பனை மீனாக்ஷி, ஏனோ அவருக்கு அந்த பாத்திரம் ஒத்துவராதது போல் தோன்றுகிறது.முன்பே குறிப்பிட்டது போல,படத்தில் வரும் சைக்கோத்தனமும் காட்சிகளும்தான் பார்த்தவர்களுக்குப் பிரதானமாய்த் தெரிந்ததே தவிர,மன உளைச்சல்களும் மன அழுத்தமும் மன ரீதியான இன்னபிற பாதிப்புகளும் ஒரு மனிதனை எந்த நிலைக்கும் கொண்டு செல்லலாம் என்ற உண்மையை,பார்த்து படத்தை வெறுத்துவிட்டு சென்றவர்கள் உணரவில்லை என்றுதான் கூறவேண்டும்.உணரவில்லை எனில் மனம் இன்னும் வளரவில்லை என்றுதான் எடுத்துக்கொள்ளவும் முடியும்.

To every citizen in this state cinema is not just motion picture, we take movies seriously. It is not just a pass time. I do not say this because of the inextricable link between state politics and tamil cinema, it is more because of the unending list of people who still queue up outside studios in kodambakkam, seeking Vadapalani Murugan's help for reaching stardom! Well, criticism plays a vital role in taking our movies to the next level. Reviewers have always played an important role in deciding a movie's fate in the silver screen. Be it Vikatan or Hindu the first thing that we do after coffee on friday morning is read the week's movie reviews! Here is a sincere attempt to review new movies and bring back to life the old ones!!

The first review in Cinemapatti! Here it goes!

We wanted to start off this blog with a good movie. I was just thinking about some of the good movies that we saw in recent times and there I zeroed in on PAYANAM.

A Silent movies production, Prakash Raj - Nagarjuna starrer, directed by Radha Mohan- This is the resume of the movie. Enough brand names in it. Well, the plot is simple and straight. A flight carrying ordinary passengers enters into an extraordinary situation - HIJACK. It is always interesting to see how ordinary men would react to such extraordinary circumstance. The govt of India as usual sends in a committee of IAS officers and a NSG commando. What continues is the clash between the bureaucracy's 'keep talking' strategy and the commando's 'operation' strategy. Due to unexpected turn of events the latter wins and no prizes for guessing who emerges the winner.

The plot sounds very simple. Execution is definitely immaculate. The director has clearly chalked out the characters of the ordinary people in the flight. Be it the 'dhanda sooru' subash - Dr Narayana Sastry duo, or the Shining star and his fan duo, or the Father, Doctor-Colnel-Sandhya, every track has been clearly etched out for the audience to actually connect with them. The successful connect is the reason behind the success of the movie. The positives of the movie include- the detailed character sketch of every passenger. Lack of songs definitely helped making the movie gripping. Dialogues- Man! that was so well written. Perfect editing and cinematography, clear delivery of the message. What more do you expect out of 2 and half hours! Coming to the negatives, I would prefer calling it the not-so-positive side, there are a few. The hijack did seem pretty crude. If Nagarjuna the NSG commando was not the hero, I do not think NSG commandos will be allowed to scream at IAS officers like he does in the movie. The bomb diffusion scene in the end is quite unrealistic, rather cinematic. I mention this because rest to the movie sticks to the basics laws of reality. Some parts do go overboard. I would rate it at 3.5 on a scale of 5. Payanam- journey of change and with a change. A movie you can watch and enjoy with your family without any apprehension.

Do watch it in theatres! Its a movie that gives out message and entertainment!
